This week I bought a pound of organic kale…for a dollar. I’ve struck leafy green gold at a dollar store near my hotel! I hop in every morning to see what sort of organic selections they have to offer me. Lately it’s been packs of romaine for juicing and today I was thrilled to snatch up their last box of organic cherry tomatoes!

Dollar Kale!
Britney and I have been working our way through this box the last couple of days- yesterday I threw together a kale salad dressed with creamy avocado, fresh garlic, a bit of plain tomato sauce, and a scoop of dijon mustard. The tomato/dijon combo was surprisingly amazing as a sauce!

Adorable Banana Babies
I’ve also been melting over these cute-as-heck baby bananas- they are so dense and cake-like. I’ve fallen in love. Speaking of fruit, I thought I’d mention some tweaks I’ve made since doing The Rose Cleanse last January. I happily juiced-til-dinner for the majority of February and still do on most days now. As long as it feels good, that’s what I do. I did however, find myself feeling a little lackluster once in a while and thought I’d tentatively experiment with some fruit. I used to get really bloated and sleepy eating fruit and doing a sugars cleanse felt really right. The first time I had some fruit post-cleanse though (and I’ve been eating similarly for a lot longer than just this year) I felt incredible! It was so filling and light at the same time and while I don’t indulge every day I’m able to feel out which days it’s really going to feel awesome and which days I’m happy with my veggie juices. I’ve tried out coffee and tea and amazingly (which was never the case before) the fruit feels better. I’ve gone the coffee route a few times in a frantic work pinch but it’s definitely not the norm.
A few other changes I’ve made: I like to eat some nuts and seeds with my dinner sometimes (tahini dressings make the top of the list), early veggie snacks before dinner tend to happen on long work days, and I’ve been toying with raw-honey sweetened desserts. I try not to take in any more sugar than my usual dark chocolate bar feeds me and sometimes a raw honey/cacao treat really hits the spot! That’s about all the changes I can think of. How are all of you post-Rose Cleansers doing?

Dollar store organic veggies?? Whattt??? That’s an all-star win!
I’ve still been juicing until dinner and this past week I’ve been doing all raw blended smoothies and soups for dinner because the weather in Michigan has become INSANEly gorgeous! All I want is to roll around in the sunshine and frolic in the now looming flowers
This week I’ve been moving more raw – raw tahini, banana, avos – and I’m seeeriously thinking about adding low-gly fruits. Great to hear they are working so well with your body!
I’ve been feeling like doing a lot more raw too and I’ve really been enjoying it! It doesn’t feel “too cleansing” as long as I keep up with the colonics. I’ll look forward to hearing how your fruit experimenting goes
Mmm I want to try that kale combo
Yay! You’ll have to let me know what you think, it might just be my bizarre taste buds
$ store organics – I would be doing a happy dance if I came across that
I did calculate that eating organically here costs roughly 15% more than conventional, so it has come down a lot over the last few years.
Post cleanse, I’ve been tending to have juice – green smoothie – dinner. I’ve also drastically reduced my chocolate consumption and have been enjoying more raw based desserts – or no dessert at all, which has felt like a bit of a relief for my body.
I’d like to do green smoothies pre-dinner sometimes too- definitely will start playing around with them when I get home next month!
I never go without dessert in the evening but cutting back on the chocolate has certainly been a relief for MY body.
I little wonder how many calories do you eat daily. I mean when you have only dinner it would not reached even 1500 cal. Areńt you loosing weigtht? Because if I eat only dinner I will lost and I can not afford it. Next when I see your recipes I really like it but when you eat only dinner and mainy plant based except goat cheese wher do you get enough vitamin k2, vitamin A, D, and omega 3 fatty acid (dha epa). I have read many many books and for me it is logist Chris Kresser approach that when you cleanse the body(by veggies fruit ) you need to feed body too. He states that you can not get enough vitamin A,D,K2 from plants also omega 3 fatty acid like dha epa. The same Paul Jaminet, both of them are highly educated men with many years of research and practise.
I used to obsessively count calories and it was so stressful and depressing for me! It’s been incredibly liberating eating this way, calories never really occur to me and unless I don’t feel well or my energy is low I have to desire to change anything. Eating really clean and doing colon cleansing hasn’t left me feeling like I’m lacking anything either fortunately, I’m definitely open to experimentation if it does at any point though! I’ve also lost a bit of weight (about 25-30 pounds) eating well in the last couple years and my body seems to be in a happy place at the moment-not over or underweight.
Dollar store organic kale? Seriously, what a score! That’s awesome that you’re feeling great while incorporating fruit. I’ve had that experience before however right now I’m at a point where I have to stay away from fruit for a bit…it’s interesting how you can just feel what you need at any given time if you just tune in. I saw on your last post you’re taking the Advanced Training in June…so am I and I am SO pumped! Are you going to NYC or tuning in via skype?
Oh please tell me you’re going in person! I’m definitely going in person, SO freaking excited!
The fruit thing is funny, I know what you mean. I’ve had times of coming off of it and times of coming back to it, this is definitely the best it’s ever felt!
Very excited for your new blog btw
After a WHOLE lot of trial and error (and sugar detox/Candida cleanses) I’ve come to realize that I can eat a ton of fruit, as long as I keep my fat consumption super low. I was so sick eating the goat cheese and avocados and butter and such. I’ve been eating primarily fruit with a good dose of veggies and very little fat for a week now and never felt better in my life!
I’d be interested to know where the $ store is, I’d love to check it out when I get down there! (Assuming you’re still in AZ?)
Holly! I had been wondering how your cleanse was going! Yay for experimenting, I’m so glad you’re feeling good! Have you always done well with fruit? I know I didn’t used to do well on fruit until I cut it out for awhile and now it’s amazing!
I don’t know the exact address but I’m sure if you google “99 cent only” stores you can find the one that’s a few blocks from the Superstition Springs Mall in Mesa. It’s a vegetable goldmine!
Thanks!
I used to do horribly with fruit, but once I took the fat out is was like MAGIC. I did the typical new-to-raw thing for several years and ate a TON of raw desserts and gourmet dishes (I love to play with food), in other words, I ate a primarily nut diet. Then when I learned Natalia’s ways I think I took the permission to eat butter and cheese a little too far! I’m doing those in moderation now (not eating an entire block of cheese a day, plus several TBS of butter, plus an avocado, Plus coconut milk ice cream, plus some nuts most days as well… I was eating over 100 grams of fat per day most days) and I’ve been feeling so amazing! I’m eating fruit until about 4 pm, then veggies (and of course morning juice, usually until lunch). I have SO much energy, my bothersome symptoms are disappearing one by one… and I’m finally unbloating (been waiting for that for 15 years!). I feel so free, like I’ve been unleashed. No more anxiety and panic. No more wondering what is wrong with me and being scared for my life, wondering how I can eat such healthy food for so long and still be so sick I can’t even take my kids to the park– NO MORE! I feel better than I ever have in my life, and I get to eat my very favorite food, sweet, juicy, fruit : D (I’m a little bit excited lol)
Beautiful!! What do your after-fruit dinners look like now? If you don’t mind me asking
Lately I’ve just been doing a big mixed greens salad with veggies and lemon or lime juice/stevia and then a cooked veggie side, usually steamed. I like dipping lightly steamed veggies in marinara. Here and there I’ll still have some goat cheese or eggs mixed in there. I still do sweet potatoes, cut up and baked with just a wee bit of coconut oil or butter (instead of baking them and slathering them in butter and salt like I used to). Last night I made a delicious stir fry with very little oil. I love roasted and grilled veggies and those can be done with just a little oil as well. Keeping it reeeeal simple : )
Yeah, I’ve really been feeling like simplicity is where it’s at! Thanks for sharing!
