The Juice Feast Chronicles – Day 63 of 90

I’m having a love affair with algae. Spirulina to be specific. I’ve been craving it (along with…well…most things) lately so when I saw that Trader Joe’s now sells an affordable bottle of the green goodness, I jumped on it! I melted into the first taste, it was oddly cheesy and nutty and all around wonderful. It’s also chewable. So while I would usually be adding a scoop or two of the powder to a juice, now I’m just eating it between sips of freshly squeezed orange juice. I tried to rationalize this. Spirulina. How bad can it be? Well not bad at all…unless you’ve decided to juice exclusively in order to wake up as much old waste and cleansePhoto on 5-14-13 at 9.17 PM #2 as much as possible for a certain period of time. And when you haven’t chewed anything (besides some bee pollen once in a while) for over two months it’s easy to get a little chew-happy. These are little bottles but I’ve munched my way through one and a half of them in the last three days. I’m pretty sure that’s not on the juice feasting protocol. Not that I’m following anybody’s rules but I did check with Courtney (Spirulina Junkie and Juice Feasting Queen) who let me know that the “official” word is 2 Tbsp of spirulina per day. Oops. On the one hand, I had a *killer* colonic today pouring heavy, heavy, heavy old waste which left me feeling better than I have in days. I thought this could have had something to do with the spirulina. Still, there is plenty of time in my life for detoxing with food, I’ve set aside this time for juicing and no to minimal digestion. I’d say that means holding back on the seaweed love a bit.

Once I’m done with this though I’m thinking of creating a recipe involving kelp noodles, spirulina avocado sauce and nori sheets. Seaweed, wrapped in seaweed, dipped in seaweed. Yum

Juice (and spirulina):

28 oz cucumber/celery/pineapple/cilantro/lemon juice

24 oz cucumber/kale/dill/lemon/garlic juice with Himalayan sea salt

40 oz orange juice with spirulina

32 oz carrot/romaine/lime/jalapeno juice

24 oz orange juice

16 oz store-bought broth

16 oz orange juice with spirulina

spirulina. lots.

The Juice Feast Chronicles – Day 61 of 90

Well holy booty cleansing, I finally had a productive colonic last night. I was only nauseous briefly today after a big carrot juice but it’s been a much better day than the past few. We went to the farmers market for the first time this season and picked up some gorgeous apples, pears and asparagus. There was also a trip to the thrift store for Summer clothes which I have to admit was pretty fun, everything was fitting really well.

I decided to start playing with a little psyllium and bentonite. I’ve heard mixed reviews, some say it’s life changing and others say it’s more bother than it’s worth. I’ll let you know!

Juice:

water with psyllium and bentonite

32 oz carrot/cucumber/romaine/mint juice with a tsp of cacao, a few drops of stevia, and a pinch of sea salt

30 oz orange juice with cayenne

30 oz carrot/romaine juice

32 oz orange juice with spirulina

24 oz tomato/cucumber/parsley/lemon/onion/garlic juice warmed with mushroom/carrot broth

The Juice Feast Chronicles – Day 10 of 90

Wow, day ten!! After today this will be the longest I’ve ever gone on juices. I woke up feeling just awful, headache, a bit of nausea and exhaustion so ended up calling in sick for the day. After lots of rest, juice and the usual protocol I’m actually feeling pretty great! I’m sucking down the Photo on 3-22-13 at 1.31 PMlast of my juice today (pineapple/orange, omg) and loving it. Also, no pesky cravings which was nice.

A couple of things I learned while taking it easy today:

1. Boiling orange peels with cinnamon sticks and cloves an then letting it simmer makes our apartment smell amazing. A nice use for all those orange peels I would be throwing away!

2. I need to stick with basic juices I know I like more often than not. I think I’d generally be happy sticking with a couple basic green juices and a couple orange juices. They always satisfy me which is more than I can say for some of the more “creative” combos.

Lots and lots of juice:

24 oz celery/romaine/cucumber/lemon juice

32 oz pineapple/orange juice

8 oz coconut water/romaine juice

probiotics (sample from the natural foods store)

32 oz celery/romaine/orange/green onion/tomato juice blended w 1 Tbsp raw honey

40 oz pineapple/orange juice

plenty of spring water

The Juice Chronicles – Day 5 of 90

juice feastDay five and I’m quite tired with a headache that’s been there since this morning. I’ve had far too little sleep and too many days without any colon cleansing. Not recommended. I’ve had some cravings start to come up as well. Tonight I did some dry brushing and took a long hot bath with Aromatherapy Dead Sea Mineral Bath Salts while I drank my green pear juice and I’m looking forward to an early bedtime!

On the upside I feel like my body has started to lean out a little which is surprising. I’ve never lost weight on a fast (even up to ten days) so I didn’t really have any expectations in that regard. I have to say, it’s nice to see a little more of the muscle tone I’ve been working so hard for!

I should add that I’m drinking plenty of water although I don’t add it to my days juices.

Today:

32 oz Get Happy tea with vanilla stevia

32 oz carrot/apple juice

34 oz orange/cucumber juice with sun chlorella

32 oz celery/romaine/carrot/tomato/lime juice

2 Tbsp bee pollen

28 oz cucumber/romaine/pear juice with vanilla stevia and cinnamon

2 Tbsp bee pollen

The Juice Chronicles – Day 4 of 90

Almost everyone who’s juice feasting journey’s I’ve followed have said that the first few days are juice feastthe hardest. That has not at all been the case for me, I can’t believe how easy it’s been! I’ve been very deprived of sleep and worked some very long days but I’m still going strong! In fact, I recovered from my flight yesterday about a hundred billion times easier than usual.

In other news, I am STOCKED with 32 ounce containers for travel juices. Thank you Goodwill! While I’ve used glass mason jars almost exclusively in the past, plastic are so much easier to tote around. I can’t tell you how many mason jars of juice have shattered on the floor or broken against each other in a cooler. Plastic is never ideal but I’m doing what I can to make these 90 days really doable.

Today’s juicy goodness:

40 oz orange juice with sun chlorella

16 oz celery/romaine/lime juice

16 oz oj with sun chlorella

16 oz celery/romaine/lime juice

16 oz oj with sun chlorella

32 oz carrot/tomato juice

90 Day Juice Feast – Day 1

Am I crazy?

This has been the most common thought floating around my brain on day one of NINETY days on fresh juice. This is daunting, let me tell you. I don’t have any doubts that I can do it, I’m just feeling anxious about difficult days where I really, REALLY don’t want to. Long days at work, parties, going out, late nights…I didn’t pick a particularly slow and easy time in my life to do this but at the same time, it sort of feels like the time chose me.

Physically, day one has been easy so far though I still have the evening to get through and I anticipate that being the most challenging part. I feel really great and am LOVING including fruit juices for the first time in a fast. Thankfully I was off today and spent a heap of time gathering inspiration from the juice feasters who came before me. Curious to see some folks who’ve actually done this? Here are my favorite’s I’m catching up on:

Angela Stokes-Monarch

Courtney Pool

Philip McCluskey

Matthew and Victoria

In addition to feasting on juices and the above inspiration, I’ve hopped on board with a couple of other challenges (I LOVE a good challenge) that are meshing perfectly into my life at the moment. The first is the Organizational Challenge! This awesome blogger put together a really great 12 week Spring cleaning challenge that has my kitchen looking sparkly and the rest of my home just juice feastwaiting to join in! The other challenge is the 21 day Chopra Meditation Challenge that Deepak Chopra teams up with Oprah to do. So far I’m not wild about this one but I’ll give it a few more days to see if it grows on me. I love the idea of meditation and I’m always saying I wish I had a regular practice but I’ve never committed to it. I also find most guided meditations to be a bit cheesy and I have a hard time taking them seriously.

I will be recording my daily juices in the above Juice Feast tab and will use this space to share how I’m feeling. In the meantime I’ll be trying to stay the heck away from Pinterest and all it’s tasty temptations ;) However, if you’d like to follow along with my juice board, I’ll be taking advantage that quite often!
